My Rapid Review
My Thoughts: Using beautiful hand-crafted dioramas, the reader is taken on a magical journey with Hank, an adorable stuffed monkey(?), over land and sea and even above the clouds. Using full two page spreads, the author creates mirror images of individual scenes. On the left hand side, Hank shares his dream with his friend, the hummingbird, taking him through the forest, over grassy knolls, sitting precariously atop a rope bridge, swinging playfully on a vine, and through other outdoor settings detailed meticulously by the book’s creator, Rebecca Dudley. On the right hand side, we see Hank in identical poses, dreaming of floating in a delicate, elegantly crafted air ship. The effect is simply enchanting!
Hank Has a Dream is a piece of art that families will grow to treasure. What is evident to me is the love the author has poured into the book creating each individual scene with incredible attention to detail. Elements of individual scenes including the air ship, trees, vines, hills, flowers, water, down to the last blade of grass, were created using every day materials such as clay, fabric, wire, paper and each scene was then photographed keeping lighting, shading, and perspective in mind. I spent a great deal of time just marveling at the details in each scene. Incredible!
Hank Has a Dream features meticulously hand-crafted dioramas of natural landscapes coupled with simple text to transport the reader on a magical journey through forests, over grassy hills, and high above the clouds. This is the perfect bedtime book to share with young children who will marvel at the magical scenes and who, just like hummingbird, will demand, “Tell me again!”. Ages 2 to 7.
