A fresh and heartwarming new story from Il Sung Na about finding the courage to make a friend.
Bird is new to the forest, and he’s looking for a friend. Bear could use a friend, too.
But Bird is too shy to introduce himself. Just as he musters the courage to say hello . . . it’s too late! Bear has already found a friend: a bright, shiny red balloon.
Has Bird missed his chance?
From the acclaimed Il Sung Na comes a charming and beautifully illustrated story about courage, kindness, and friendship.
Bird, Balloon, Bear is a delightful new picture book about shyness and friendship written and illustrated by Il Sung Na. Using his signature style, Na shares the story of Bird, who is new to the forest and is looking for a friend to play with when he spies Bear playing with Balloon. Not knowing how to approach Bear, Bird watches from a distance yearning to join the two friends as they share some of life’s simple pleasures.
When a gust of wind unexpectedly blows Balloon away, Bird doesn’t hesitate to chase after Balloon; but unfortunately, Bird cannot save Balloon. As with many events in life, all things happen for a reason and the loss of Balloon opens up the door to a beautiful new friendship between Bear and Bird.
Il Sung Na successfully delivers a simple message in this lovely new picture book centered on a character struggling with an issue sure to ring true to most children at one time or another in their life; namely, feeling shy about meeting and connecting with new friends. Children will love the colorful illustrations and will easily relate to the emotions experienced by Bird. Na’s beautiful story about friendship is appropriate for children just beginning preschool or kindergarten who are just beginning to experience the themes in the book for the first time (ages 2 to 6).
One note about the book… both of my children (10 and 13) read the book (it happened to be sitting on the kitchen table). Both had the same reaction to the story which I felt was worthy of mention. They both said that they were very sad when the balloon popped and they wished the balloon had simply flown away instead. I think having the balloon pop made for a “neater” story (i.e., the friendship between Bear and Balloon definitely ended), but prepare for a reaction to the balloon popping!
