A little known fact about our family is that my daughter and I like to run races together. There is one race in particular that we’ve done for a few years now: the ChildRun.
On the first Sunday of June, every year in Vancouver, British Columbia, the ChildRun takes place. The ChildRun is the largest family fun run in Vancouver and the impetus behind the race is to raise funds for the childhood cancer research and treatment areas at BC Children’s Hospital, one of the largest Children’s Hospitals in Canada. On Sunday June 2, 2013, the 28th Annual ChildRun presented by the Wilson Family will host runners and walkers of all ages and abilities on a scenic 5 km route through our lovely Queen Elizabeth Park or the Thrifty Foods 1 km Fun Run.
Some Facts and Figures About Childhood Cancer
* The following facts and figures were found through the Childhood Cancer Canada Foundation.*
Every year in Canada, 1 in 8,000 children and adolescents under the age of 17 will be diagnosed with cancer. There are currently 10,000 children in Canada who are living with cancer. The most common childhood cancers are leukemia, tumors of the brain and nervous system, the lymphatic system, kidneys, bones and muscles. Sadly, 1 in 4 children diagnosed with cancer will die from the disease. Roughly 70% of children diagnosed with cancer will survive, but the long-term effects of treatment on these young bodies can be devastating and long-lasting.
The good news is that, through research, outcomes have improved dramatically over the years. In the 1950’s only 10% of children diagnosed with cancer survived, whereas now nearly 3/4 survive! It is only through increased research on the prevention and treatment of cancer that such advances can continue. The ChildRun consistently raises over $1,000,000 for childhood cancer research and treatment and we LOVE taking part in this great, great event.
What’s so Special about this Year?
While my daughter Danielle and I have run this race before, THIS YEAR, we are being joined by my son Dominic for the first time! We are all excited to be doing this together and have already been doing practice runs. Turns out my son is quite speedy! Old Mom will have a hard time keeping up with the kids!
AND, my kids have decided to donate the SHARE portion of their allowance collected over the past 6 months toward this great cause. My daughter will be donating $19.00 and my son will be donating $10. I’m so proud of them!
Will You Help Us?
We are now asking you if you are willing to make a small donation to help us raise some money for this great cause. We are not looking for huge amounts – even $5 would be so, so helpful! If you are not able to, that’s totally ok, I’m happy just to share a bit about our lives with you and you can send us some positive vibes that day! You can make a donation by clicking the big Donate button located below. Thanks so much!
