Happy International Book Giving Day!!
We are thrilled to be taking part once again in International Book Giving Day 2014 (February 14). International Book Giving Day is to is a day dedicated to getting new, used and borrowed books in the hands of as many children as possible and we have stacks to give away this year once again. As we did last year, I have separated out books for school-aged children to be delivered to my kids’ schools and all the others to our local library branch. This year, I just happen to be going to the dentist (I know, just what anyone would like to do on Valentine’s Day) so I have a special bundle for their waiting room as well!
~ Sharing the Love (the love of books!) ~
Speaking of “Sharing the Love”, I received this little gem of a book just AFTER Valentine’s Day last year and I am so happy to be able to share it with you today as a Rapid Review.
Title: We Go Together! (Curious Selection of Affectionate Verse | Author/Illustrator: Calef Brown | Publication Date: January 15, 2013 | Publisher: HMH Books for Young Readers | Pages: 40 | Recommended Ages: 4+ | Reviewed by: Renee (Mother)
Summary: In Calef Brown’s poem “We Go Together,” he jubilantly decrees: “We go together / like fingers and thumbs. / Basses and drums. / Pastries and crumbs.” In “You Are Two (Kiwis),” he muses, “I am quite frequently, / reminded by thee / of a kiwi. / Either kind.” Yes, silliness and sentimentality have free reign in this “curious selection” of childlike poems about love and friendship, each accompanied by an equally absurd, stylized acrylic painting. Like Sandol Stoddard’s I Like You, We Go Together! this book makes an offbeat Valentine’s gift for anyone with a good sense of humor and a penchant for wordplay.
My Rapid Review: We Go Together! is a collection of simple poems all about expressing gratitude and affection for a variety of people (and things!) in our loves. For example, in “Thank You”, a young child shares his gratitude with his mother who removes a splinter in his hand. Many others, like “Laughers” and “FBF” and “Backup” celebrate friendships. All of the verses use simple language and feature less than 15 lines. Additionally, the illustrations (made from acrylic) are quirky, fun, and eye-catching. In short, this is a wonderful book to share with people you care about in your life, including your children.
Here is one of my favorites, “Because of You” – this one put a smile on my face (and yes, I did have to explain what “optimized” meant to my children)!
I was once
Now I’m a half-fuller.
Because of you –
So if I should smile
and say something sunny,
don’t look at me funny
or act surprised.
