Mother Daughter Book Reviews is pleased to welcome author and illustrator Corrina Holyoake as a guest contributor with us today. Ms. Holyoake is here to celebrate the new release of her first book “Animania”!
Yay, it has been quite the journey but I can officially announce that my first book Animania is available in both print and as an e-book. I have inflated my arm bands, donned the flippers and ready to take that dip into the huge self publishing ocean.
I am primarily an illustrator and have been illustrating children’s books for five years now. Last year I decided that the time was right to produce my own book, a dream that I have always had, even as a child.
This book shows the true essence of what my work is about and that is to create some giggles out there. How did Animania come about? Well I give full credit to my children. I find it easy getting images down on paper but trying to come up with a concept for writing… well that’s a different story. Children have the best imaginations in the world so it made sense to use them in my brain storming sessions.
The concept for Animania is something my son Dylan came up with when he was 8. We were having one of our nonsense chats on the way to school discussing what animals we could make up by mixing them together and what we could call them. We came up with characters such as the Prickly Python, Antosaurus and Miniphant etc. A little light bulb switched on flashing “picture book”
So I was going to write a story based on that concept but after doing some research I noticed that there was already a book out on the market like that…typical! So I changed the idea and thought I would turn it into an alphabet book with a twist. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise, as now not only do I have a rather silly little book, but it is also a fun educational tool. The book is made up of short catchy 4 lined verses for each letter of the alphabet. I had no idea what any of the “animals” would look like and the two little mice were never part of the plan, they just seemed to appear out of nowhere.
I made the decision to self publish, why? I hear you ask….. well…. mainly for timing issues. I have a day job lurking in the background so time is not my best friend. I figured if I self published it will be up to me as and when I could do things. Also the support network out there for indie authors is huge, so many lovely people willing to help and swap ideas (cue a big thank you for letting me do this Renee ~ you’re welcome!) Yes it is an incredibly daunting idea to think about doing this all by yourself, but so many people do it. You just have to take the bull by the horns and try your best. There is a heck of a lot to take on board, but if you are willing to put the time in to network and research you can get the results you want and make your dreams come true. I have absolutely no idea where this journey will take me but I know one thing, I am going to have muchos funos taking it, and if it raises a giggle here and there along the way then my job is done, I couldn’t ask for anything more.
Animania is an animal alphabet book with a twist… the twist being, these are not your normal animals! An utterly ridiculous rhyming picture book aimed at the 4-8 year age range. This book is full of characters that will leave a lasting impression and is aimed for the young and young at heart.
Corrina Holyoake is a children’s illustrator and author based at the seaside resort of Bognor Regis in the south of England. She has had a love for painting and writing from an early age and always wanted to do something creative when she grew up. As a child, she would spend hours drawing her favourite cartoon characters and illustrating her own stories. She even wrote plays for her school at the tender age of ten. Her love of art continued into adulthood, and she has experimented in many different creative ventures over the years. After taking a sabbatical to raise her family, she decided to dust off the paintbrushes and naturally fell into the wonderful world of illustrating. She has been illustrating children’s books for other authors over the years and has only recently started dabbling in writing again. A big kid at heart and a firm believer in laughter being the best medicine, her aim with her books is to spread some cheer and to raise a giggle.
