I am so pleased to be able to feature a talented young artist this week. We have Isybilla Gee, the six-year old illustrator behind the “Issy Books” with us. She and her Mom Jennifer are our Guest Reviewers this week.
The “Issy Books” are written by Pat Calfee, an educational consultant and retired teacher/educator and are illustrated by her young granddaugther, Issy. The books are a series for emergent readers which incorporates sight words, controlled vocabulary, and colorful illustrations to entertain children while teaching them how to read.

Meet Jennifer and Issy
I am the mother of 6 year old Issy and 3 year old Sophie. Issy and my mother, Pat Calfee have published a set of emergent readers called The Issy Books this year. My mother is a retired teacher and is currently a reading specialist/consultant. She wrote all 11 of The Issy Books. The books were based on characters that Issy imagined and named. She then illustrated all 11 books.
I am an ob/gyn who works full time as a mom and an MD. Art and reading are two of the most important things in our house. I am always painting or creating when I am home and my girls have flourished in this environment. There is always someone creating art in our home. Issy began reading early, at age four and has developed a love for reading. We have tried to nurture her love for art and reading by providing tons of books with great illustrations. Little sister Sophie is now constantly creating and following in her sister’s footsteps.

Here’s what Jennifer has to say about the importance of books and reading in her home:
Reading is important in our home because it is something we do together. My husband and I are both avid readers. Our children see us reading and know that we enjoy this as a past-time. They see reading as something you do for fun.
Jennifer and Issy chose to review the picture book A Bad Case of Stripes by David Shannon. Click HERE to read their review. Thanks Jennifer and Issy! For more on Jennifer and Issy, please visit our Contributors page or click on the book cover above.
