From the Caldecott Medal–winning creator of The Invention of Hugo Cabret and Wonderstruck comes a breathtaking new voyage.
In this magnificent reimagining of the form he originated, two stand-alone stories—the first in nearly 400 pages of continuous pictures, the second in prose—together create a beguiling narrative puzzle.
The journey begins on a ship at sea in 1766, with a boy named Billy Marvel. After surviving a shipwreck, he finds work in a London theatre. There, his family flourishes for generations as brilliant actors until 1900, when young Leontes Marvel is banished from the stage.
Nearly a century later, Joseph Jervis runs away from school and seeks refuge with an uncle in London. Albert Nightingale’s strange, beautiful house, with its mysterious portraits and ghostly presences, captivates Joseph and leads him on a search for clues about the house, his family, and the past.
A gripping adventure and an intriguing invitation to decipher how the two narratives connect, The Marvels is a loving tribute to the power of story from an artist at the vanguard of creative innovation.

Review by Daughter
1. What is the book about?
This book is a bit of a mix between 2 stories, one told in pictures and another in words. However, each story connects to make one story. In the story, Joseph runs away to his uncle’s house because he doesn’t like his life at school. But when he stays with his uncle, (Albert Nightingale) he suspects something strange is going on. So with the help of Frankie, a girl he met on the way to his uncle’s house, Joseph tries to solve the weird mystery of the Marvels who were a family of actors (which was the part of the story told in images).
2.Who is the main character?
The main character is Joseph, a boy who loves to read and who runs away to stay with his uncle Albert. I thought he was very interesting and I liked that the story was told from his perspective.
3. What are your favorite parts of the book?
I really liked how the story of the Marvels was actually told in the book using images. After the images, was what seemed like a completely new story until you read the part where Joseph starts to wonder what is going on. I thought this 2 books in 1 approach was really cool and I really loved it.
4. Was there anything you didn’t like or didn’t make sense?
No, everything made sense to me and the book was really great!
5. What do you think of the book cover and other images?
I thought the images in the book were really cool and descriptive and the cover was really detailed and really eye-catching.
6. Overall, what did you think about the book?
I thought this book was really good. It was so good that I couldn’t put it down. In fact, I read it in one sitting!
7. Who do you think would like this book?
I think boys and girls ages 10-14 would like this book.
