My Thoughts: I knew I was destined to fall in love with Blucy. We are a family of cat lovers and blue is my favorite color. In this delightful new book by Julia Dweck, we are treated to a wide array of typical “cat behaviour” – that is… aloof, playful, and a bit destructive. Scratch that… alot destructive. I had to laugh at the page where Blucy was hanging by the curtains – we have one of those cats too!
As usual, Julia Dweck entertains through brilliant whimsical rhyming verse. Here is a sample:
Now Mandy thought that Blucy might be hiding in the pots,
But Blucy had lay down to rest among Forget-Me-Nots.
So no one noticed Blucy as she watched the bumblebees.
Until she sniffed a flower and then blasted out a sneeze!
Julia Dweck has worked with many fantastic illustrators and for this book she has teamed up with Erika LeBarre. The illustrations are gorgeous! They fill up the whole page and feature a beautiful palette of colors. At the start of the book, Blucy is actually an orange cat; but, as she experiences new emotions, she changes color – a very unusual shade of blue. It is quite comical to see the pictures of Blucy engaged in typical cat-like behavior. Great illustrations!
There are a few add-ons at the back of the book. As with all her previous books, we are treated to a caricature of the author, Julia Dweck, and the illustrator as characters in the book. There are a series of little “cat facts” such as “Cats can make over 100 sounds.” On the last page, there is a fun activity where children can search for items (e.g., butterfly, cat, flower) in a larger diagram. These add-ons were terrific!
My Bottom Line: Julia Dweck scores another winner Blucy! This book is beautifully illustrated, features solid rhyming verse, has a most unusual main character in Blucy the cat, and will surely be loved and appreciated by all cat-lovers! I would recommend this wonderful picture book to children who love cats and for their grown-ups who will recognize their own cat’s behavior in this funny story. Ages 3+.
