Title: Time for Bed Little Ted | Author: Kryssy Yodel | Illustrator: David Batchelor | Publication Date: November 18, 2014 | Publisher: Kids Need Stories | Pages: 12 | Recommended Ages: 1 to 5 | Reviewed by: Renee (Mother)
Summary: This simple rhyming story follows Ted in his bedtime routine, as he gets ready for bed, shares a favorite story and finally goes to sleep.
Pop-ups provide enlarged, easy to read, text of this calming bedtime story. Children are also able to open pop-ups to reveal two key words on each page. The story is supportive of the Common Core English Language Standards, in the Kindergarten Reading Strands.
My Thoughts: Time for Bed Little Ted is a bedtime rhyming picture book written by parent and teacher Kryssy Yodel. Little Ted gets himself ready for bed by cleaning up his toys, getting into his pajamas, brushing his teeth, getting into bed, and, of course, reading a bedtime book. I thought it was brilliant how the picture book’s story literally outlines a bedtime routine for children to imitate. It is almost identical to the one I started with my children when they were little.
The book was written not only by a teacher, but in consultation with early learning specialists in both the U.K. and the U.S. (incidentally, there is both a U.S. version using American spelling of words and a U.K. version using British spelling of words). While the text is deceptively simple, there are a number of simple concepts introduced in the story including counting (1-2-3), transportation (“your train goes along the track”), how to do self-care (“Toothpaste too, like Mommy said”), and finally, the importance of reading (“Finally, read your favorite book”).
The rhyming in the story was very well done and I didn’t stumble over any of the verses. In fact, the text will be effective in soothing young children at bedtime as the verses can be read as a lullaby. Fitting in with the calming, soothing text are the subdued illustrations featuring a color palette of muted shades of color instead of bright and bold colors. The images are simple with just a few key features per page making them perfect for very young children.
My Bottom Line: Time for Bed Little Ted contains the right ingredients for a solid bedtime picture book for young children. There is only one character depicted in the story (Ted) and children will be able to identify with him as he walks through the steps of a typical bedtime routine (e.g., putting toys away, putting on pajamas, brushing teeth, and so on). The solid rhyming, lilting verses, and simple illustrations come together to create a wonderful picture book that I highly recommend to caregivers looking for a new bedtime story for their young children. Ages 1 to 5.

About the Author: Kryssy Yodel
Kryssy Hurley (KidLit author name, Kryssy Yodel) is a part-time teacher and a parent to two boys, currently aged 8 and 11, the youngest of whom has PDA (Atypical Autism). She is a huge fan of picture books and gets very excited about these, especially if she discovers a new author! She believes picture books are like little gems, perfectly formed, every word having to count.
She gave up a permanent teaching post to work in a way which is better for her youngest son’s needs and which also allows her more time to write. Kryssy and her family live in a small village in the English countryside, just outside Bristol in the UK. Apart from writing she enjoys long dog walks, exploring new places, climbing, writing poetry and meals with friends and family.
Before having children, she wrote and traditionally published an educational book about incorporating Personal, Social and Health Education in school Collective Worship. She currently also writes resources for teachers for the ‘Teachers Pay Teachers’ website. This is her very first preschool Kindle ebook and an interactive linked story app is on the way!
Publishing is constantly evolving, with increasingly sophisticated, but often bewildering, technology. Digital media and the possibilities that story apps and ebooks provide is very exciting. There will always be change and she is a strong believer in embracing it!
