1. What is the book about? This book is about somebody who lives in a refrigerator. He cleans it up and turns the light on and off. And there are a bunch of short stories about some of his adventures.
2. What do you think of the cover and/or the pictures in the book? I liked the cover and the pictures. There was just the right amount of pictures to tell the story.
3. What is your favorite part of the book? I liked lots of different things about the book like the Fridge Olympics. I also liked how the person who wrote the story was creative like making the bed out of ice and the lamp out of an icicle. I liked how there was an “Icycle” (instead of a bicycle) in the story.
4. Since we’ve read the book, how many times have you checked the fridge to see if there is a little person hiding in there? Twice. I was wondering if there really was someone in there!
5. What was your favorite event in The Fridge Olympics? The ski-jumps were my favorite. They don’t even need to leave the fridge and they get to land in a lemon meringue pie!
6. Overall, what did you think about the book? I liked the book, it was really funny. I would rather have someone read it to me than read it myself.
7. Who do you think would like this book? I think boys and girls 8 and under would like this book.

My Thoughts: Sometimes I start reading a book to my children and I just know that we are going to LOVE it. Within the first few pages (see excerpt above), we knew that The Amazing Adventures of Chilly Billy would be such a book. The opening chapter grabbed us and kept our interest until we reached the end and were disappointed that the book was over. This classic book was first published in 1981 and has just been re-issued as a digital book. There is something just absolutely charming about this book.
Chilly Billy is the little man who lives in your fridge and turns the light on and off. But that’s not all he does! He also cleans up leaks and spills; re-organizes the contents depending on the time of day (e.g., breakfast items in the front in the morning); adjusts the temperature depending on the weather forecast; and does so much more. The author has indeed created a very imaginative setting for this most unusual and unique main character. He did such a great job in fact that my children really pondered whether we had a Chilly Billy living in our fridge. Judging by the state of our fridge, I would say that it speaks for itself! lol
Chilly Billy is not the only character in the book. For example, when Chilly Billy gets sick, a lovely nurse, Lily comes to look after him. [SPOILER: They fall in love!] The author cleverly sneaks characters in and out of the fridge through food deliveries (e.g., milk, eggs) and the removal of items for meal-time. He thought of everything! While there are a series of short stories involving the adventures of Chilly Billy, the “big” story revolves around “The Great Annual Fridge Olympics and Frozen Sports”. The sports in this event includes the ski-jump off of the top of the milk carton, acrobatics involving swinging and twirling from the shelf bars, and the “Tossing the Carrot” event (highly resembling the caber toss). This part of the book produced many laugh-out-loud moments as well as a lesson in good sportsmanship. All-in-all, so much fun!
My Bottom Line: The Amazing Adventures of Chilly Billy is a highly imaginative and charming book that is sure to leave children and parents alike in stitches. I highly recommend this book to parents looking for a read-aloud book for a diverse range of ages. My 7 and 10 year old both absolutely loved this book and what was great is that I thoroughly enjoyed it as well. In short, The Amazing Adventures of Chilly Billy is an excellent, clean, and fun-filled book for all ages.
More Buzz About the Book
“Chilly Billy by Peter Mayle is such a breath of fresh air! A classic children’s book that is easily a fun read for all ages, including adults! The illustrations are charming and bring Billy to life. Children will love hearing about Chilly Billy and his adventures inside the fridge, not to mention meeting his friends and the sweet Lily. The story is written in a style that flows wonderfully and moves from one of Billy’s adventures to the other without losing any of the charm. Who knew there was a Chilly Billy inside our refrigerators polishing ice cubes and looking after the contents of the fridge? I would recommend this book to parents, care givers and to children of reading age. The author has given us a story that’ll stick with whoever reads it, and I’m sure we will all peek in the fridge now and then to try to catch sight of our own personal Billy!” ~ 5 Stars, Curious One, Amazon

About The Author: Peter Mayle
Peter Mayle is a New York Times and internationally bestselling author. His books have been translated into twenty languages and have sold millions worldwide, as well as being made into a major motion picture and a TV series. He is best known for his books about Provence, France. But his earliest work was entertaining educational books written for children and teens.
Peter, who has five children, wrote The Amazing Adventure of Chilly Billy for his two sons, along with its sequel Footsteps in the Butter (coming soon!). The illustrations are by acclaimed children’s book artist Arthur Robins. First published in 1983, The Chilly Billy books sold millions worldwide but went out of print and were more or less forgotten, with some of the original copies later selling for a thousand dollars.
Peter still loves these books, but it was his wife, Jennie, who suggested they be re-issued in digital format as well as print. Escargot Books, which has already re-issued other work by Mayle, will also be producing this book for their upcoming Ear Movies—innovative radio-theater style audio books—with British actor Terence Stamp playing the role of Chilly Billy.
