Title: Picasso-ville: An Imaginary Place Consisting of the Visions of Pablo Picasso | Author & Illustrator: Pat Luttrell | Publication Date: February 28, 2014 | Publisher: Independent | Pages: 28 | Recommended Ages: 3+ | Reviewed by: Renee (Mother)
Summary: The incredible works of Pablo Picasso, coupled with the colorful illustrations of Pat Luttrell, brings a young boy’s dream to life. He finds himself smack in the middle of a village called Picasso-ville, where high in the sky he sees a sun bursting with red and blue lashes. Here everything looks different yet everything feels right. Let your imagination soar as you read the rhyming words that describe the works of Pablo Picasso, as seen through the eyes of children in the author’s art appreciation class. In quoting the master himself, “Everything you can imagine is real”.
My Thoughts: Picasso-ville is a visually beautiful book starring a young boy who has a dream about traveling to “Picasso-ville” – a village filled with the color and shapes of Pablo Picasso’s most famous paintings. Transported to this imaginative world in the comfort of his bed, the young boy meets the Girl with the Boat, the Man With a Straw Hat and Ice Cream Cone, Three Musicians, and more until he finally feasts his eyes on the great man himself in a self-portrait, Pablo Picasso. Rhyming text is used to briefly describe each of the eye-catching paintings and the visual feast will be sure to ignite children’s imaginations.
This wonderful picture book is an absolute gem! With its colorful reproductions of some of Pablo Picasso’s most famous paintings, it is first and foremost visually stunning. As we all know, Pablo Picasso took a bold and colorful as well as abstract approach to art and children will be absolutely fascinated by the artwork itself. I loved how the artwork was presented in the book. There is a two-page spread focussed on one painting. On the one side of the page, is rhyming text briefly describing the painting or, more accurately, describing what the young boy in the story sees in the painting. The Picasso-inspired artwork behind the text created by the author is absolutely sensational.
On the other side is a reproduction of one of Picasso’s paintings with the name of the painting, the year it was painted, and the medium included below. Under the painting, in the right corner on the bottom is a teaser (i.e., a single element) from the next painting, creating a bit of an “I Spy” game for children.
All in all, the artwork throughout the book is absolutely gorgeous and children will thoroughly enjoy just sitting down with the book exploring all of the details on each page.
I love the basic concept of this picture book which falls in-between the fiction and non-fiction genres. There is much educational value in the book as ten of Picasso’s paintings are included. Further, at the back of the book, all of the paintings are included with information about where you can visit the original and there is a short biography on the life of Pablo Picasso. Picasso-ville has tremendous potential for teachers, parents, or homeschoolers to discover more information about Picasso and his paintings. I can also imagine in my mind supplemental activities to go along with this fantastic picture book.
Picasso-ville is the first in a series of dreamscapes that will introduce the “Masters” to the young child 4-8 years of age. I am excited to see where this series will go. UP NEXT: “van Gogh’s Fallen Star” – coming September 2014. (LOVE van Gogh!)
My Bottom Line: Picasso-ville is a feast for young eyes with its representations of the bold and colorful artwork by Pablo Picasso, delightful rhyming text, and great add-on information included at the end of the book. I highly recommend this book as an educational book about art for young children and as a resource for teachers, parents, and homeschoolers to spark a child’s imagination. Ages 3 to 8.
