My Thoughts: When I first read through Emma and Snowbell my heart sang. I have always loved books that are sung to familiar tunes. My kids can attest to the fact that I sing songs changing the words depending on my mood, the clothes I’m wearing, the direction the wind is blowing… well, you get the picture! As you can see from the inside pages above, Emma and Snowbell is sung to the tune of “Jingle Bells”. My kids and I had a hoot singing our way through the book.
The story itself is filled with whimsy and magic as Emma and her classmates get whisked onto the back of some of Santa’s reindeer. They journey across the night sky revelling in the view from far above. And sadly of course, Emma and her friends must soon part ways with the reindeer because “somebody” needs them for “some reason”. *ahem *
The illustrations of Emma, the reindeer, and the other children are absolutely adorable. Emma is depicted as a cute little girl with pink hair in piggie tails. The reindeer all look super-friendly and have big blue (or brown) eyes. If you look closely, you will see Snowbell’s name written on her haunches. This is a bit of an “I Spy” exercise! It almost appears as if the background is painted on canvas and then overlayed with the computer generated images of Emma and Snowbell. Overall, I think children will love the bright, colourful, and detailed illustrations.
My Bottom Line: Emma and Snowbell is an absolutely delightful rhyming picture book filled with whimsy and magic and sung to the tune of “Jingle Bells”. I think young children aged 2 to 6 will enjoy having this book read/sung to them by a loving parent, grandparent, or teacher.
