Table of Contents From “knowonder! (Volume 3)”
My Thoughts: I was approached by one of the Editor-in-Chief of knowonder!, Kathy Sattem Rygg, who offered to send me a Volume 3 in the knowonder! book series, which is comprised of a collection of 30 short and original stories written by professional children’s writers from around the world. What is unique about the knowonder! books is that they are intended to be read-aloud books. What a great idea!
The main idea behind knowonder! is to foster literacy by encouraging parents and children aged 3 to 10 to read a minimum of 20 minutes per day EVERY DAY. Knowonder! uses a Story-A-Day format by providing reading content every day of the month through the knowonder! website (free), digital books, and print collections such as the one we received. For example, one volume (typically providing 30+ short stories) contains enough material to easily fulfill the goal of reading for 20 minutes per day. It is no coincidence that individual stories take approximately 20 to 30 minutes to read aloud!
In our household, I have been reading books/stories to my children since birth. What is getting increasingly tricky is that I have a 10 year-old girl and a 6 year-old son. Needless to say, because of their differences in age and gender, what interests them individually is getting to be miles apart. So what happens on occasion is that I have one child tuning out while the other is getting engaged with the story. Enter knowonder!: the 30 stories in the Volume 3 collection include stories featuring a diversity in characters, themes, and genres. In some cases, the stories will likely appeal more to girls (e.g., To Be or Not to Be a Princess by Kathy Sattem Rygg). If you have older children, there are stories that will hold their interest as well (e.g., A Dark and Stormy Night by Christine Collier). There is a story for every one. We took turns choosing a story in our house, and it worked out really well.
There are other features of each collection that are worthy of mention. Each story features one image related to the story, but no more. The stories purposely do not include many images because they are so descriptive that children should easily be able to visualize the story using their imagination. According to the knowonder! site, one of the benefits of read-aloud stories is that children can foster the use of their imagination instead of relying on cues. In lieu of illustrations, at the end of each story, children are given a space on the page to draw their own picture from the story (although in some cases, there is a Word Scramble or other activity instead featuring words found in the story). There are also a few fun activities at the very end of the book. These are value-added in my opinion.
Also featured at the end of each story is a short section entitled “Question Time” which lists 4 or 5 questions about the story designed to test children’s listening and comprehension skills. The questions range from simple questions recalling details of the story (e.g., “How many eggs did Molly have?” from Where are the Ducklings? by Adelaide B. Shaw), to more complex questions testing comprehension (e.g., “Why did Dr. Franklin need the GIGANTIC hat from a lady?” from Dr. Franklin’s Staticy Cat by Rolli). When I did these with my children, they could easily answer the questions, not because the questions were easy, but because these read-aloud stories are FANTASTIC!
My bottom line: I simply love the concept behind knowonder! and the dedication to promoting and enhancing literacy by facilitating reading and story-telling through their collections of fun short stories about cats, dogs, pigs, princesses, mermaids, monsters, dragons, and so much more.
Who Would Like This Book? I highly recommend the knowonder! volumes to families with one or more children between the ages of 3 and 10. Each volume contains stories sure to appeal to children of any age (and their parents!)
