After his first successful day at school, BLEAGH returns home eager to share his new experiences but someone gets in his way…BLEEP, his baby sister! BLEAGH learns important values such as respect and independence and the two siblings team up to become an unstoppable learning force.
My Thoughts: Well, if you’ll remember, we were huge fans of the first book by Leana Lyn Doray, Bleagh! What we loved about Book 1 (i.e., its sympathetic main character, the valuable lessons and positive messages contained within the pages, and the fun, kid-friendly illustrations) remain true about the second book, Bleagh and Bleep! Well, it turns out that Bleagh has a little sister, and together the two have many experiences which provide the opportunity to learn new values.
As with the first book, there are badges on some of the illustrations which highlight a specific value (e.g., “respect”, “commitment”, “independence”, “curiosity”, and more). Through the use of rhyming verses, Bleagh and Bleep learn many new important lessons. I love the way the author makes it easy to tie the concept being taught directly to the text. This makes it very easy to identify discussion points for parents or teachers.
In the first book, Bleagh was new to a school and had to learn how to interact with his peers. In this book, Bleagh, his sister Bleep, and a few friends work together in coming up with a school project which they then present to the class. There are values specific to this type of exercise (e.g., curiosity, enthusiasm, and confidence) that are discussed in the story. I like how the whole story ties together and how several values relevant to the main theme are included in the story. It’s very well done.
My Bottom Line: Bleagh and Bleep! is an absolutely delightful follow-up to the first book featuring Bleagh alone. We were thrilled to discover that Bleagh has a little sister Bleep and that together, they still have so many lessons to learn. I love the diversity of values included in the book and the context in which they are presented. I think most children will relate easily to one or both of the main characters and the experiences they have while having to complete their homework and their special school project. Parents and teachers will easily be able to identify discussion points in the story to share with young children. I highly recommend both Bleagh! and Bleagh and Bleep! to parents, teachers, and librarians to teach children ages 3 and older a variety of common values.
