1. What is the book about? The book is about a pirate who wants to go find treasure using a map. He goes on his boat to go get the treasure. He goes on an island and finds a treasure chest. When he opens it, there is a surprise.
2. Who is Captain Crossbones?Captain Crossbones is the captain of a pirate ship called The Lunacy.
3. What do you think of the cover and/or the pictures in the book? I liked the pictures on the cover and in the book. I think we should call the captain, “Captain Unibrow” because he has a unibrow. He was fun to look at.
4. What is your favorite part of the story? I like stories about pirates and treasure hunts. My favorite part was the surprise at the end.
5. Anything you didn’t like? I liked everything about the book.
6. Overall, what did you think about the book? I think it’s a good little pirate story and I really liked it. My Mom did a good job doing pirate voices. I want to give it 5.5 stars.
7. Who do you think would like this book? I think that boys and girls around my age that like reading about pirates would like this book.

What it’s About: Told in sing-song rhyme, Captain Crossbones takes readers on a journey across stormy seas to an island where lies buried treasure more valuable than gold. Following his treasure map and assisted by his loyal crew, Captain Crossbones soon finds where ‘X’ marks the spot. But what will happen when the old lock is not so easily broken and what treasure could be more valuable than gold?
My Thoughts: There are some things you just can’t go wrong with when it comes to books for young children: pirates, adventure, action, and a surprise ending. Victor Ramon Mojica has written a sweet, fun-filled tale sure to be loved by children and their families. The story itself, that of a pirate following a map leading to the most wondrous treasure of all, is not necessarily original, but the sweet ending is sure to delight children and will make this book a bedtime favorite.
As we all know by now, I’m a big, big fan of rhyming verse in picture books because it makes reading books out loud so much more fun. Add to that the opportunity to do it all with a pirate “accent”, well, can I just say that we were all very entertained?! Little known fact: September 19th is Talk Like a Pirate Day. I am sooo there! For the record, I can report that the rhyming and cadence were excellent – no issues there.
The illustrations in this book are outstanding. All of the pictures are very detailed and colorful. From the depictions of Captain Crossbones himself (who indeed does seem to have a unibrow!), to the imposing pirate ship “The Lunacy” (lol), and the crashing waves of the ocean during stormy weather, my son enjoyed just flipping through the book finding minute details in many of the illustrations.
My Bottom Line: We all really enjoyed reading Captain Crossbones and the special message at the end of the book was a pleasant, if not unexpected, surprise.
Who Would Like This Book? This book provides an opportunity for a parent or grandparent to snuggle up with their little ones at bedtime to share with them a good story that reinforces the message that sometimes the most valuable treasure is right under our noses. Ages 3+
