Mother Daughter Book Reviews is pleased to be coordinating a Blog Tour for the lower middle grade book “Axel & Theo: My Dog is The Emperor of a Faraway Galaxy” by Amberly Kristen Clowe from June 22 to 28, 2015. This one is a great choice for reluctant readers!
About the Book
Title: Axel & Theo: My Dog is the Emperor of a Faraway Galaxy | Author: Amberly Kristen Clowe | Publication Date: November 15, 2014 | Publisher: Smooth Sailing Press | Pages: 44 | Recommended Ages: 6to 10
Summary: Theodore Howard wants a white flag. The kind of white flag that will show Riverwood Elementary’s biggest bully, Theo’s given up on ever surviving the fourth grade, and achieving his dream of becoming a real-life astronaut. But, Theo’s seemingly pathetic future gets a glimmer of hope in the form of a very talkative weenie dog named Axel. Theo learns that his best friend on four legs, is actually an alien from the planet Doglin, and just when he begins warming up to the idea of having an alien for a best friend, Axel is kidnapped by two cats from the planet Catlat. Theo chases after Axel and his kidnappers, embarking on an adventure he could have never imagined.
The Buzz About the Book
“When I saw the subheading of this book — My dog is the Emperor of a faraway galaxy, I knew I had to read it. After all, how often do you see a sci-fi kid’s book? Being the sci-fi nut that I am, I couldn’t pass this one up. I was not disappointed.”~ Shari T., Amazon
“Fun book!! The story is imaginative but told with enough familiar themes to make young ones think, “I can see how this could happen!!” And in a world jam-packed with princesses and girl power, it’s nice to see fun stuff for boys, too.” ~ Valerie S., Amazon
“What a nice story! Got this for my son and he chuckled through it all. He loved the characters and their adventure. He is looking forward to the next one.” ~ Nathalia G., Amazon
“It is a great book! My kids loved it (as did I).
I can’t wait for the second adventure!” ~ John, Amazon
Author Interview: Amberly Kristen Clowe
An avid story writer since elementary school, Amberly Kristen (Krissy) Clowe truly discovered her passion for writing after enrolling in a college, children’s literature class, where they read and analyzed children’s books. After completing her BA in early childhood education she began her teaching career.
Axel & Theo is the first chapter book series written by Clowe, though she already has two other children’s picture books in print, and another due for publication in 2015. Today, her children provide the inspiration to her many stories, along with everything else she loves in life.
Krissy was kind enough to answer some questions for us today, so without further ado, here she is!
About the Book
What is YOUR favorite part of the book?
My favorite part of Axel and Theo is when Theo first experiences all the weirdness that is Doglin. From a sense-enhanced hologram, a field of flowers that smells like meat to an underground facility, resembling a beehive with medical pods for injured soldiers. The craziness of Doglin just keeps coming. I kind of love that.
Sounds like it was a great opportunity to tap into your creativity and imagination. Science fiction is definitely one of my favorite genres.
Can we expect more books from you in the future?
Yes!! The second Axel and Theo book is in editing at this very moment! I will also have a picture book out with Smooth Sailing Press later this year. I have such a heart for both of these books. Of course, it’s dreamy to get to continue Axel and Theo’s space travels. I can’t wait for readers to dive into this new one. The picture book is such a special story, too. My mom is a very talented woman. She sings like an angel, and she can also make the most beautiful flower arrangements. Both of these talents are highlighted in the new picture book, tentatively titled, Miss Clara Lily’s Gift.
What a lovely gift for your Mom! She must be so proud. We’ll have to keep an eye out for your picture book and the second Axel and Theo book.
About Being an Author
As a child, what did you want to do when you grew up? What inspired you to choose to write books?
For a long time, I wanted to be an optometrist. I have an eye condition called nystagmus. This causes my eyes to shake uncontrollably at times. I had a really amazing surgeon who reduced the shaking significantly when I was eleven. I thought helping people in this way would be really rewarding. And then a few awesome teachers later, I decided to pursue teaching. I loved to write creatively as a child, but kind of forgot about that once the research papers hit. Once I began teaching and reading beautiful literature again, the creativity bug bit me pretty hard.
I must admit that I had never heard of nystagmus. When I was in graduate school, I did a stint working at the Canadian Institute for the Blind and I learned so much through that experience. I love hearing how an individual’s personal experiences inspire their career path. So many people mention the impact one or two teachers have had on their lives. What a great profession!
What has been the best compliment you received as an author?
An Amazon reviewer said she would be adding the Axel and Theo series to her son’s shelf, alongside his Magic Tree House series. Something about a reader liking both works does make me smile—probably too much.
That is quite the honor! My kids loved the Magic Tree House books!
How did you celebrate the sale of your first book?
I think I just collapsed onto the floor and smiled at my husband.
Gives credence to the saying, “you could have knocked me over with a feather!”
More About Reading and Writing
What books are you reading right now?
At this exact moment, I am trying really hard to focus on answering this question instead of finishing the ending to Starstruck by Brenda Hiatt. It’s about a teenage girl who falls head over heels for the gorgeous, new jock in town and, in the process, discovers he’s a Martian. Then, he reveals that she is also a Martian—the long lost Martian princess.
Well, that is quite the coincidence! Thanks for the recommendation.
What is your favorite book of all-time (adult)?
I read the Fallen series by Lauren Kate, over and over. It’s about a timeless love. That whole epic, meant-to-be stuff gets me every time.
I’ve had this series on my e-reader for years! I really must get to the books at some point!
More About the Author
What do you do when you are not writing or reading?
I’m watching Marvel: Agents of Shield or soul-grooving it up at the gym or cutting and gluing something with my son.
Those are quite the diverse interests! I used to do Zumba at our local community centre and it was so much fun. Great way to get in shape and learned some great dance moves too.
If you were stranded on a desert island what 3 things would you want with you?
Husband & kids (can these count as a package deal?). Chocolate. A Kindle that magically stays charged. Pappasito’s spicy shrimp enchiladas (sorry, I had to choose four).
Yum! Those enchiladas sound delicious! I was looking for an image to include and now my tummy is rumbling. I couldn’t find the shrimp enchiladas but the combo plate looks SO good! (Link goes directly to restaurant’s website.)
If you could choose only one time period (i.e., past, present, or future) and place to live, when and where would you live and why?
Definitely the future. I want to see all the cool gadgets we come up with next. I would live somewhere with a perfect view.
I agree – I love gadgets too! There is new stuff coming out all the time and it just gets cooler and cooler!
- Dessert? Chocolate Sheet Cake
- Movie? Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightley)
- Smell? Tommy Hilfiger cologne (my husband’s favorite)
- Flower? Tulips
