Publisher: Tate Publishing
Number of pages: 68

Princess Petra’s unusual birthday request sends the royal court into a frenzy, but when she agrees to undertake a knight’s quest they can’t stop her. Armed with a cake knife and outfitted in the best royal pots and pans, Petra sets off to face a dragon and win her real armor before encountering a bog witch, and an army of the kingdom’s worst enemies. Will Petra’s kindness and acceptance prove to be more valuable than weapons and armor?
Excerpts From Our Reviews
My Thoughts: I thought it was funny when Petra couldn’t fit into the armor, so she used pots and pans instead. I also liked that instead of fighting all of the enemies that she runs into, she makes friends with them. I learned that instead of using violence (like killing the dragon), that sometimes there are better solutions (helping the dragon).
My Bottom Line: I loved this book and I recommend it to girls and maybe boys 11 and under.
My Thoughts: To give a little background of our experience with this book… Every night, the kids and I read together before bedtime for about 20 minutes or so. On one night, we were between books, so we decided to pick up Sir Princess Petra with the intention of reading about half of it before the kids would begin their independent reading before bedtime. So, we began to read and at the half-way mark in the book, we looked at each other and I asked, “One more chapter?”; which was received by a resounding “YES!!”. We kept doing “one more chapter” and the next thing we knew, we were done (about 40 minutes after we began)! It was THAT good – we didn’t want to stop reading.
All of that to say that Sir Princess Petra is a wonderful read-aloud book with a diverse range of characters and a quirky writing style that kept the children completely engaged from the first page to the last. Diane Mae Robinson has created a charming main character in Petra who rejects the stereotype of what a princess should be in favor of serving her kingdom as a royal knight. Petra is precisely the type of role model I love for girls: she’s spunky, she’s brave, she’s kind, and she’s a problem-solver. ‘Nuff said – SHE ROCKS!
My Bottom Line: I really feel that this little book is a gem. It is a relatively short book (70-ish pages) that can easily be read aloud to children in one sitting. My kids and I were completely captivated by this fun, adventure-filled tale about a very charming and unorthodox princess. I highly recommend this book to families with children under the age of 10 and as young as 5 who love a good tale filled with fairy-tale characters such as dragons, witches, princesses, and knights.
The second book in the Pen Pieyu Adventure Series, Sir Princess Petra’s Talent will soon be available (September 2013). Here is a sneak peek:
Summary: Sir Princess Petra has already proven she is a kind and noble knight. This, however, does not please the king and queen—they want her to behave like a princess and forget this silly knight nonsense of hers! When the king writes a new rule in the royal rule book that requires her to attend Talent School and acquire a princess talent certificate or suffer the spell of the royal magician, Petra, reluctantly, agrees to go. But who could have guessed what Sir Princess Petra’s Talent would be?
