A Barred owl becomes injured and must ask others for help. He promises to give back to those who have a generous heart and he is true to his word. My Thoughts: The Christmas Owl is a beautifully illustrated rhyming book filled with warmth and an important underlying message about kindness and gratitude. The story begins with an injured owl who must rely on the kindness of other animals (some of which are naturally his prey) to give him shelter and food until he is healed. We witness how each animal is at first reluctant to help, but they each open their hearts and home and help the owl. When the owl recovers, he repays his debt to each animal by giving them a gift each Christmas Eve. I loved the sensitivity the owl demonstrated in providing an appropriate gift to each animal (e.g., a book to the bat who loves to read).
The illustrations, which resemble oil paintings, are absolutely gorgeous. I also thought that the “Christmas bell” which appears above the text helped in creating a holiday feel to the book. I don’t normally comment on font choice, but I do feel that even the font fit in with the theme. All-in-all, the book is just absolutely heart-warming and I can see it becoming a holiday tradition year after year.
My Bottom Line: The Christmas Owl features beautiful illustrations and a heartwarming story about kindness and gratitude. I highly recommend this book as a read-aloud story for families around the holidays. Ages 3+

About the Author: Angela Muse
I was born in California to a military family. This meant that I was the “new kid” in school every couple of years. It was hard always trying to make new friends, but I discovered I had a knack for writing. I began writing poetry in high school and really enjoyed expressing myself by using pen and paper. After becoming a Mom in 2003, I continued my storytelling to my own children. In 2009 I wrote and published my first children’s book aimed at toddlers. In 2012 I am set to release several more children’s books. Check out what I’m working on by visiting my children’s book blog.
Writing is such a wonderful creative process and I look forward to sharing more of my stories with lots of new little readers!
